About the Kitchen Gardener

Gary Crandall’s career as an edible landscaper reaches all the way back to 1989 as an apprentice in the UC Santa Cruz Farm & Garden project. There he received a Certificate in Ecological Horticulture and stayed on as a teaching assistant. Since then, a combination of formal training with certification at Merritt College and over 15 years of work experience has led to his standing as a seasoned organic production gardener as well as an experienced landscape carpenter.

After leaving Santa Cruz Gary began working in the production garden at Mudd’s Restaurant in San Ramon. In the mid 90s Gary left California to develop two production gardens in Montana. One of these gardens was at the B-Bar Ranch in Gardiner and one was at Chico Hot Springs in Pray. He then returned to California and for the past four years has been the garden developer and manager at non-profit Buttercup Farms in Clayton. In that role he distributed produce to local restaurants and started a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program.

Among his many interests, Berkeley-based Gary is an avid hiker, long distance runner, graphic artist and nature photographer.
